New to R?

R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics, created by the open-source community and used worldwide by hundreds of thousands of statisticians, researchers and analysts in every industry.

R is also an environment for people inventing new statistical models. This extensibility is why R has become the predominant tool used by university statistics departments in graduate-level courses. Extensibility is also why R enjoys heavy
commercial use within financial and pharmaceutical
companies where unique statistical models offer competitive advantage.

The R-Project is a major, open-source community. Nobody knows exactly how many users and contributors exist, but estimates usually exceed one million. No corporation can keep their proprietary product improving at the rate delivered by such a large, active, open community.

Major open source communities spawn complementary commercial support organizations such as REvolution. Think of Red Hat for Linux, Sun for Java. These companies bridge the gaps between open source offerings and your needs.
